The 3 Best Things About Color in the Kitchen

By Chris Thiede

Sur la Table 224x300 The 3 Best Things About Color in the KitchenI was browsing through one of the newest locations of Sur la Table the other day, and I was struck by how colorful the store was. Small appliances, utensils, linens and ceramics were all available in a rainbow of vibrant colors.

Color in the kitchen isn’t a new trend by any means. Smeg has offered a line of 50s retro-styled refrigerators in bright colors for a few years, and Daltile (Daltile is an IMRE client) offers tiles in nearly every color imaginable.

But color is permeating accessories, utensils and other less permanent products, providing alternatives to the usual black, white and stainless and offering some nice benefits for the homeowner:

1 – An easy splash of color

In an otherwise monotone kitchen, adding a bright red mixer here or some yellow and blue utensils there is a great way to liven up the room. It can add that little pop of color that makes for a nice finishing touch. Even better, it’s a low-cost, low-commitment solution. If you get bored with a color, you can always change it later.

2 – Make it fun

In the past, bright colors have been reserved for outdoor dining or special events, but now color is creeping into everyday kitchen products. And why not? Color adds energy and excitement. It transforms a simple, functional spatula into something more. It makes cooking and meal preparation a fun process that people share. Fun isn’t just for barbecues and birthday parties anymore.

3 – Get kids involved

As we wandered around Sur la Table, looking at all the colorful things, my five-year-old son was having a blast. He was picking out rainbow-colored measuring cups (shaped like fish!) and neon-green olive oil sprayers. It struck me that the best thing about color is it helps get kids interested in cooking. The benefits of teaching kids to cook are well documented. If a bright-red spatula makes my son want to help me make pancakes on Saturday mornings, what could be better than that?
